Tiger Woods Book The Big Miss

The Big Miss The Big Miss: My Years Coaching Tiger Woods By Hank Haney, is due for release on 27th. March 2012. In case you don’t know Hank Haney was Tiger Woods’ swing coach for 6 years. Apparently there was an exchange between Woods and Golf Channel contributor Alex Micelli about some detail of an anecdote in the book.

“In a news conference, Miceli asked Woods about an anecdote that was in the book about Woods and his desire to be a Navy SEAL. Miceli said he asked Woods because he had only heard about the report and had not yet seen the book.

“I’ve already talked about everything in the book,” Woods said. “I’ve already commented on everything, Alex.” Miceli suggested Woods had not answered his question and the exchange included Woods saying to Miceli, “You’re a beauty, you know that?”

The Best Golf Instructional Books

There Are Lots Of The Best Golf Instructional Books To Choose From

Golfers often ask what are the best golf instructional books? There are so many golf books to choose from it’s hard to pinpoint one title from another as being the best. There are good and not so good parts of most books on the teaching of the golf game. The best option is to recommend the golf classics.

Who Writes The Best Golf Instructional Books?

By that I mean books authored by golfers who have had success on the golf course, in terms of winning tournaments. These are usually the well known golf personalities, such as Ben Hogan, Harry Vardon, Byron Nelson, Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus, Gary Player and many more. The list can easily become very long.

It’s a fact that the best golfers aren’t necessarily the best at teaching the game to others. That’s why some of the most popular golf instruction books are written by lesser well known golfers. I think it is important for any golfer who wants to improve his or her golf game to sample a few different golf teaching books before deciding on one as the best.

We are all different physically, and it is important to take that into consideration when trying to model your golf swing on someone else who maybe has a different physique to yours.

Speaking for myself, I know I couldn’t copy Tiger’s swing if I tried. My physical make-up is totally not the same, which tells me to find someone else to model my swing on.

If you are struggling to find the best golf books, why not try a search on Amazon and see what comes up? The result is quite interesting and some of my favourites are there. Click here to see them.

Dave Pelz’s Short Game Bible: Master the Finesse Swing and Lower Your Score

Dave Peltz, well known author of the bestselling golf book, The Putting Bible, switches his focus here to The Short Game Bible .

Buy Now On Amazon UK

The short game is the department of the golf game most handicap golfers dread, because it requires skill and practice to become good at it. There is no doubt, if you can conquer the short game, you will score well at golf.

Dave Peltz has been around golf for a long time, and he knows what he is talking about. The Short Game Bible is intended for players of all ages and abilities.

A useful feature of this book is it gets you to accurately assess your own weaknesses and then set about improving them systematically, with the author’s carefully researched and tested plan. The fact is, too many golfers are willing to practice trying to hit the ball longer off the tee, for instance, than are prepared to work on their short game. Less glamour in approach shots, I suppose.

This is the book for the golfer who recognises this weakness in their golf game. The  Short Game Bibleis a useful reference to keep for years to come. If you are in a hurry to improve just one aspect of your short game straight away, such as pitching, you can do that, and get the problem put right, while leaving the rest of the contents of the book to a later date.

If you want to re think your short game strategy on the golf course and shoot lower scores, this is the book for you.

The Complete Golfer – Herbert Warren Wind

The Complete Golfer , edited by Herbert Warren Wind, was first published by Simon & Schuster in 1954. In my opinion, it is one of the best golf anthologies that has been published, and will probably become a classic golf book in years to come. Between its covers, you will find some of the best writing on golf in the form of short stories, essays, humour and history.

There is a bit of something for every golf enthusiast in The Complete Golfer. You can sample the writing of P.G.Wodehouse and Paul Gallico, for example, and Charles Van Loan.

If reminiscence is your preference, The Complete Golfer has that as well. There are samples of writing by Horace G. Hutchinson, Chick Evans, H.B.Martin, O.B.Keller, Walter Hagen and the redoubtable Bernard Darwin. If you have never read any works by these classic golf writers, The Complete Golfer is the perfect place to start.

There is a section on great players, written by such well know personalities in the golfing fraternity as Henry Longhurst, Henry Leach, Charles B. Macdonald, Gene Sarazen and Joyce Wethered. If golf instruction and theory are more to your taste you can read about that in The Complete Golfer as well, with articles by Willie Park,Jr., Henry Cotton, Tommy Armour, Percy Boomer and Herb Graffis.

And, there is a section on golf architecture, for those who are interested in that subject.

The Complete Golfer is a great read, in my opinion, and is a perennial favourite with playing and non-playing golfers alike. It also makes a great choice for a gift.

FINALLY: The Golf Swing’s Simple Secret – A revolutionary method proved for the weekend golfer to significantly improve distance and accuracy from day one – F. Tamayo

Golf Swings Simple Secret J F Tamayo You might be just a little sceptical about yet another golf instruction book, written by a not very well known author. So what is different about Finally: The Golf Swing’s Simple Secret by JF Tamayo?

Buy Now On Amazon UK

It actually does what it sets out to do, which is to improve your golf game. How do I know? Because of the testimonies of those who have actually bought the book, and seen an improvement in their golf game in a short space of time. The improvement comes across the board, from lower handicap to higher handicap playing abilities, and from golfers of different ages.

You can read The Golf Swing’s Simple Secret in a couple of hours. The concepts are clear and simple, and the method that is taught is unique. So if you want something more from an instructional book on golf than just a good tip or two, then this is the book for you.

The Golf Swing’s Simple Secret is targeted at the weekend golfer, whose need is for improvement in the golf game and takes into account the general shortage of time available for practice and therefore improvement. JF Tamayo has studied the golf swing for over 25 years, and his method helps the weekender improve distance and accuracy from day one.

Two of the three concepts he teaches are:

1. Learning how to develop an easy, repeatable and solid backswing.

2. Easily learn how to lag the club on the downswing, just like the pros, and by so doing add clubhead speed and therefore more power and distance to the shot.

If you think this book cannot improve your golf game, for whatever reason, surprise yourself and prove yourself wrong.

Golf’s Sacred Journey: Seven Days at the Links of Utopia

Golf’s Sacred Journey :Seven Days At The Links Of Utopia is an intriguing title for a golf book, I think you will agree. So what is the sacred journey in golf?

The book is a story about golf and faith. It is not just about golf, but life as well. It shows how we can overcome our fears and our attitudes about ourselves, and teaches us who is in control. Dr Cook talks about all the major sports psychology strategies in golf in an interesting way.

Golf’s sacred journey is likely to appeal to the serious golfer, regardless of handicap, who is interested in the mental side of golf, and who wouldn’t be?

Not only will the book help improve your golf, but it can help with problem solving in life as well. It is worth reading for the motivational lessons alone, but it definitely helps if you are a golfer as well, because it takes you through how the golf club is swung.

Cracking the Code: The Winning Ryder Cup Strategy Make It Work for You

Cracking the Code: The Winning Ryder Cup Strategy Make It Work for You is written by Paul Azinger and co authored by Ron Braund. a licensed family therapist. If you are wondering what a licensed family therapist has to do with writing a golf book, that is a good question, and all will be revealed.

The book is primarily about team-building techniques as used by Navy SEALs. Paul Azinger, the Ryder Cup captain of 2008, divided his team team of twelve members into small groups, or pods. Then, with the help of Ron Braund, they were grouped together based on personality types, rather than on their golfing expertise. And, the tactic worked.  Cracking The Code The Winning Ryder Cup Strategy

Cracking the Code: The Winning Ryder Cup Strategy Make It Work for You, tells the story of how the US team overcame their underdog status and won back the Ryder Cup for their country, after almost a decade of European dominance in the event.
The team building techniques described in the book are applicable not only in the context of this particular golf event, but can be applied to other group sporting and non sporting events alike.

Moment of Glory: The Year Underdogs Ruled Golf

Moment of Glory: The Year Underdogs Ruled Golf, by John Feinstein focuses on the year 2003. This year is chosen, because it was the year that Tiger Woods took to the sidelines, as far as contention in the Majors was concerned, because he was struggling with his golf swing.

That left room for the less well known golfers to take the titles, and Moments of Glory: The Year Underdogs Ruled Golf is their story. The winners of the four Majors in 2003 were Ben Curtis, Mike Weir, Jim Furyk and Shaun Micheel, and they all shared the same characteristic of being first-time winners.

Since their wins, none of the golfers had much success, although Mike Weir did one another Major in 2004. In Moment of Glory, John Feinstein traces the personal and professional struggles the golfers have experienced since then. The book gives insights into how winning and losing major golf championships changes people’s lives.

Stack And Tilt Golf Swing

The stack and tilt golf swing is a different way to learn how to hit golf shots. Different, that is to the traditional golf swing.

Buy Now On Amazon UK

In the traditional methods of teaching people to play golf, they are normally taught the key concepts of the golf fundamentals such as how to grip the club, how far to stand from the ball at the address, and how to swing the club.

Stack And Tilt Golf Swing Instruction Book

Stack And Tilt Golf Swing Book

The authors of the Stack And Tilt Golf Swing teach a different approach to the golf swing. They say what top golfers have in common, is they all hit the ground in the same spot, but they all tend to swing the golf club in different styles. Once you have learned to hit the ground in the same spot, the next step is to hit the ball further, and the book takes you through how to do this. These are two of the three elements the book teaches. The last element teaches the reader how to refine the golf swing.

The stack and tilt golf swing is not without its critics, and maybe some golfers struggle applying the concept to their golf game. As with anything new, different techniques may take a little time to learn and adjust to, and some might not be able to adapt their golf swing at all.

We all find our golf game going a bit stale from time to time, and this book might just be the tonic your game needs to get it back on track. After all, that is what many golfers do anyway, when they hit a blind spot. Try something new. You will never know if you can master the stack and tilt golf swing unless you try it for yourself.

Hank Haney Golf – Hank Haney’s Essentials of the Swing

The Hank Haney golf book I am writing about in this article is impressive and detailed in its knowledge and insight into the workings of the golf swing.

Buy Now On Amazon UK

The teaching in Hank Haney’s golf book is no quick fix for a golf fault, but rather it teaches the reader how to build a solid, repeatable golf swing. I would say this is a more valuable lesson for golfers than learning a sticking plaster solution to a golf fault. Remember, sticking plasters come unstuck, in time.

Hank Haney golf swing

Hank Haney golf

Anyone whose teaching methods have gained the attention of Tiger Woods and Mark O’Meara is surely worth listening to and what he has to say about the golf game. He shows the reader how to build a powerful, repeatable golf swing, that can hit every kind and shape of shot, and, not just with your driver, but with every club in the bag.

Learning the Hank Haney golf swing by reading a book is one thing, but the reader needs to see for him or herself these principles in action out on the golf course. With this in mind, Hank Haney takes you through step by step practice sessions at the range, helping you get a feel for how minor adjustments affect ball flight and how to make these adjustments for yourself.

Written by a master instructor the Hank Haney golf book, Essentials of the Swing
is a book not just to read once and then forget about it. Rather this is a book you will want to keep coming back to.

Freddie And Me

Life Lessons from Freddie Bennett, Augusta National's Legendary Caddie Master

The following synopsis of the story is from Amazon.

A former Augusta National caddie recounts the invaluable life lessons he picked up from the late Freddie Bennett, the acclaimed club’s distinguished caddie master. Though he was born and raised in Augusta, Georgia, home of celebrated Augusta National and The Masters, as a child Tripp Bowden was too young and too removed from the game of golf to understand what Augusta National really was, what it meant to his town and the world and the sport; its history, sentiment, prestige and confidentiality.

All the ten year old Bowden knew about golf was that it was a crazy game that took up too much of his father’s time, and that he’d much rather kick around a soccer ball or stay home and read a book. But all that changed once Bowden’s father, a renowned local doctor, presented him to one of his patients, Freddie Bennett, the renowned Augusta National caddie master.

Although Bowden was a white child of appreciable advantage and Bennett was an older black gentleman of more modest means, the two formed an unique bond. It was Bennett who introduced Bowden to the game of golf, a sport that would one day earn him a Division 1 golf scholarship and lead him to the final stage of a British Open qualifier. But it was the lessons Bennett taught the young Bowden off the course that had their profoundest influence on his life.

Through Freddie and his particular brand of homespun wisdom, the author learned precious lessons about personal accountability, hard work, and regard for others irrespective of age, race or religion. He also learned that there’s much more to life than just playing golf.

Like the bestsellers Tuesdays With Morrie and Seasons of Life before it, Freddie and Me is a heartwarming tale of two improbable friends and their uncommon bond made through sport.

Ben Hogan Five Lessons – The Modern Fundamentals of Golf

This is the all time classic golf instruction book. Five Lessons, The Modern Fundamentals Of Golf was written by a golfing legend, Ben Hogan.

He did not write many golf instruction books, but this certainly is one of them, and arguably, the best. Any golf instruction books authored by Ben Hogan are worth careful study, in my opinion.

As the title of the book suggests, Ben Hogan’s Five Lessons is about the fundamentals of golf, which are the grip, stance, posture, and the swing. The great strength of this book is the illustrations, which serve to show you, the reader, exactly the golf principles being talked about.

The fundamentals of the golf game stay the same, no matter what era they are taught. So the principles of golf laid out in this book are as relevant today, in 2010, as they were back in 1957, which is when the book was first written.

ben hogans 5 lessons modern fundamentals of golf

Ben Hogan's Five Lessons

These are timeless lessons from a master of the golf game. Ben Hogan believed that it was within the capabilities of a golfer with average co ordination to break 80.

Ben Hogan himself the master of the repeatable golf swing, shows you, the reader, how to develop a repeatable swing in your own golf game. It needs work to develop this kind of swing, but with practice and application, the Modern Fundamentals of Golf can show you the way towards achieving that goal.

Bob Rotella – Golf is Not a Game of Perfect

Written by the well known sports psychologist Bob Rotella, Golf Is Not A Game Of Perfect is a golf book about the mental and emotional difficulties which can plague us during a round of golf. He steers the reader, in a conversational way, through these mental road blocks towards a more positive and confident attitude to take with us on the golf course.

It is a book for golfers at all skill levels, and by applying the principles in this book players can expect to see a change in their attitude toward the game, and hopefully, improved scores as well. It is worth checking the customer feedback on Amazon for this.Bob Rotella Golf is Not A Game of Perfect

As a golfer myself, I cannot overstate the importance of getting the mental department of the golf game under control. Put simply, why let your bad shots and missed putts ruin your golf score, when you can do something to overcome these negative thoughts? The emphasis in the book is on using the mind positively as you play your shots. If you are interested in the mental side of golf, and you haven’t already read Golf is Not a Game of Perfect, I suggest you do.

Best Golf Instruction Books – My Selection of the Best Golf Instruction Books

When we talk about the best golf instruction books what exactly do we mean?

Buy Golf Books Now On Amazon

The best written golf books, or perhaps we use some other criteria to arrive at what we believe to be the best golf training books. The preferred method to evaluate golf teaching books in this article is the popularity of the book over the years. In other words, readers have made the choice for us.

For example, Ben Hogan’s Five Lessons book is regarded by many in the golf fraternity as a classic golf instruction book. Not just in the era when it was written, but it has helped and encouraged many keen golfers ever since.

The golf instruction tips found in this book are invaluable, and are a treasure of experience from a true master of the game. Sure, other golf instruction books have come and gone since 1957 which is the year when Five Lessons, The Modern Fundamentals of Golf was first published. It’s just that some golf instruction tips have more of an impact on golfers than others.

It can be said that back in 1957 there were not as many golf books in circulation as there are today, so less choice for the reader. But, we have to remember that Ben Hogan was one of a kind. A unique golfer, in a class of his own. A perfectionist in the golf game. He worked incredibly hard at his golf swing, and was single minded in doing so. I have no doubt that Ben Hogan practiced for countless hours each day in order to perfect his golf swing. Ben Hogan 5 Lessons is my number one choice of best golf instruction book.

Ben Hogan’s other book on golf instruction is called Power Golf. The illustrations are brilliant. As a youngster just having started learning to play golf, I found the classic photographs of the Ben Hogan golf swing completely captivating in this book. I couldn’t put the book down for a long time, as I tried to copy his golf swing.

As you study the photographs in the book, the sheer power and mastery of the Ben Hogan golf swing comes out of the pages at you and leaves a remarkable impression on you of the brilliance and dedication of the player.

Jack Nicklaus Golf My Way. Jack Nicklaus was not only a superb champion golfer of his era, he also wrote many golf instruction books, including Golf My Way, which was first published in 1974. The book was co authored with Ken Bowden. Golf My Way goes into a lot of detail about the golf swing.

It has stood the test of time, and is still a popular golf instruction book today. Jack Nicklaus is such a well known golfer, that golfers still want to read how he taught others to play the game. Many of his books are packed with memorable golf tips.

Harvey Penick’s Little Red Book. This was originally a notebook of anecdotes and golf wisdom that the author intended to pass down to his son, but it was eventually published as The Little Red Book. Harvey Penick was a golf instructor and his book says all you need to know about the technical aspects of the game.

He taught Ben Crenshaw to play golf. The Little Red Book is not just about about golf instruction, but the author talks about other aspects of the golfing scene, such as course design, caddying and tournaments. It is fascinating reading.

Dave Pelz Short Game. If you want just one book to keep for reference to your short game, this is the one to buy. It is no accident that the book is called a Short Game bible. Many well known golfers have adopted the teachings of Dave Pelz in their own games, namely Lee Janzen, Vijay Singh, and Anika Sorenstam are a few of the prominent names of those who have.

Its all there, along with photographs, illustrations, charts, and lots of wisdom on pitching, chipping, sand play, putting, equipment, execution, mechanics, technique, practice, and playing the trouble shots. There is also practical advice on diagnosing the weaknesses in your short game, so that you can work on those parts of the book which will help you to improve. You can start getting your wedge shots closer to the flag after reading this book.

Tiger Woods How I Play Golf. You cannot have a page about the best golf instruction books without a mention of Tiger Woods.

The book is well written, easy to read and there are lots of relevant photographs to show you what he says in print. What great advice cautioning the reader to model their golf swing on a person of similar stature and physique. This is a long held opinion of mine, too. There is lots of good advice in this book, and I like the way the reader is reminded of the key points to remember throughout the book.

There you have it. Some of the best golf instruction books in print today. There are more golf books than ever being published now, and the game of golf has itself evolved, as you would expect with the advance of new ways of analysing and playing the game. But the fundamentals are the same, and we are lucky to have the golf swing tips of the masters recorded for us in print, for our own use.

Best Golf Books – Which Are The Best Golf Books Ever

About The Best Golf Books

When we talk about or mention the best golf books, what do we mean.? The best golf books authors perhaps, or the best golf instruction books. Or maybe the best golf books of all time? Now that’s a difficult choice to make.

Generally, golfers who enjoy playing golf, also reading books about golf I know I did as I tried to copy my father when watching him play golf. And I read the same instructional books that he read. The Ben Hogan golf book, Power Golf, comes to mind. I thought, if only I had a swing like that?

Any golfer that wants to improve his or her golf game could have no better role model for the golf game, than Ben Hogan, and modelling your own style one the Ben Hogan swing.

Pondering which is the best golf book is difficult. It depends on where your main interests in golf are. It might be in the mechanics of the golf swing, or the history of golf. Yes, don’t forget, or perhaps you don’t, know, there is a good selection of golf history books to read.

The Best Golf Books – Some Examples

There are some great golf books to read. Take Bernard Darwin for instance. He wrote some great golf books, which have become collectible, and expensive to buy in the original binding. Bernard Darwin wrote in the pre television era, when golf reporting was primarily the written word. No wonder readers marvel at the golf prose he wrote. If you have never read any books on golf by Bernard Darwin, I recommend you give one a try, just to see if you like his style.

There are some great golf instruction books too. I like the early golf instructionals, by authors such as Harry Vardon and the prolific writer Horace Hutchinson. He wrote about other topics, as well as golf, and many of his articles were first published in the magazines, such as Country Life, at the turn of the twentieth century.

A good introduction to reading books on golf, is to start with the best selling golf book at the time. It might be The Modern Fundamentals Of Golf, the all time classic by Ben Hogan. This is one of the best and most relevant, even today, golf instructional books.

Other authors on golf have come and gone, but the stalwarts, like Bernard Darwin, Henry Longhurst, Horace Hutchinson, and Herbert Warren Wind, are perennial favourites. There are other goof golf writers as well, I have mentioned these as an example of those who have written great golf books.

If I was given a piece of paper and someone said to me, write down the top 10 golf books, my list, not necessarily in any order, would be as follows:

  • Ben Hogan. The Modern Fundamentals Of Golf.
  • Henry Leach. The Spirit Of The Links.
  • Henry Longhurst. Talking About Golf.
  • Herbert Warren Wind. The Complete Golfer.
  • Bernard Darwin. Mostly Golf.
  • Sir Walter G. Simpson. The Art Of Golf.
  • Bernard Darwin. A History Of Golf In Britain.
  • Jimmy Demaret. My Partner, Ben Hogan.
  • Horace G. Hutchinson. Fifty Years Of Golf.
  • Robert Hunter. The Links.

There you have it.  Nearly everyone has an opinion about the best golf books.  Give the piece of paper to someone else and you would probably see a totally different list of books about golf. One person’s list of great golf literature is another persons list of ordinary golf books.
